Where does one come up with a name like Poogan's Porch for a restaurant? Bobbie Ball, a court reporter by day, went above and beyond to show their appreciation of beloved canine friend. That's right. Poogan's Porch Restaurant was named after a neighborhood dog called Poogan who acted as their guardian in 1976 when the restaurant was opened. Poogan died in 1979 from natural causes but his memory will live on through this eatery. However, a touching dog tale is not why you read this blog. The structure was built in 1888 as a residence. In 1680, the city of Charleston set aside four square acres of land for public use. Over the years it was a hospital, poor house, and workhouse for runaway slaves before being turned in to a jail in 1802. The original building consisted of four stories with a two-story octagonal tower. Robert Mills, America's first native-born architect, designed a fireproof wing with individual cells in 1822 which was replaced in 1855 by a rear octagonal wing by Charleston architects Barbot & Seyle. The 1886 earthquake damaged the tower and top story of the main building so severely they had to be removed. The gallows remained in the courtyard until being destroyed by Hurricane Hugo. One of the most famous of all lizard man cases is the humanoid cryptid believed to inhabit areas of swampland in and around Lee County, South Carolina. He is described as being about seven feet tall, bipedal, and stout, with green scaly skin and glowing orange or red eyes. It is said he has three toes on each foot and three fingers on each hand which end in a circular pad on them that stick to walls. Sometimes described as having lizard or human-like features. The first known sighting of the creature was made by 17-year-old local Christopher Davis. He reported encountering the creature while driving home from work at 2 AM on June 29, 1988.
