Reader Submission - Newlyweds in a Haunted House

My name is Andrew Mahaney and this is a real haunting story. In Colonial Beach, VA in a moderate sized two-story row house, within a small very old beach community on the Potomac River, my wife and I bought this house that had been on the market for many years. As a newly married couple we bought the 60 year old house and immediately started to fix it up, adding new flooring, and a kitchen. From the moment of this buy and change everything went down-hill: 1) Even during the first night we noticed the back room to house was extremely cold, in the dead of summer with no A/C this room should have been cold. My children complained of this. 2) My wife in this room would shut closet doors only to have them open and this would go on several times a day. 3) Electrical disturbances would also happen in this same room, with lights turning on and off for no reason scaring my two sons at all hours of the night, to the point they had to move to the upstairs bedrooms. 4) One n...

The Lynch House

This story begins with a woman and her husband. During the Civil War, he left his wife, Liza Thompson, to fight in the war. On his way out of town, he left the deed to their house and other important documents with a banker friend. He never came home again. After suffering such a tragedy, Liza was faced with another problem. The banker who retained the documents for her house also left to fight the war. And, like her husband, was killed. In this tale, two wives grieved for their husbands but it was a house that brought on their own war. After the banker’s death, his wife came across the deed and other documents to the Thompson home. She decided she wanted it for herself. This began a 13 year court battle between the two widows. In the end, Liza kept her home. The family that lives in the house now, known as the Lynch House, says it is haunted. Witnesses have seen Liza Thompson dressed in white, standing at the foot of beds and walking the halls of the second floor. She is describ...

Poor House Road Tunnel

The voices of children attempt to lure visitors in with their "Come on, come on". A misty dark fog envelopes you when you stand in the middle. Dark silhouettes have been spotted darting in and around the location. Such accounts are common among some haunted locations. Why should Poor House Road Tunnel in Lexington, Virginia be any different? Hauntings spur from stories, rumors and legends. In this case, the tunnel's past can only be spoken as a legend. It began as part of a railroad system that ran from Lexington to Staunton in the early 1900s. However, it's dark past can not be verified. According to some locals, the tunnel was allegedly a location for many lynchings in the 1900s. A story to account for the phantom children voices supposedly took place in the nearby woods. Two girls were playing when they came upon an unknown male who shot and killed them both. There's also rumors of a woman being raped murdered inside the tunnel. As stated before, it seems n...

Bunnyman Bridge

I'm sure some of you have even heard of Bunnyman Bridge from the show "Scariest Places on Earth." It is located in Fairfax, Virginia on Colchester Road. Now there are various stories about the Bunnyman but most conclude that he loved bunnies, of course, and also children. Some say he was a lunatic that escaped from a nearby asylum and nourished himself mainly on rabbits, leaving their dead carcasses to be found. Others say that he always dressed up as a rabbit when he killed his victims always with an axe and left them hanging near the bridge. The most common story that I have found is this: In 1904, there was an insane asylum near a small town in Virginia. The townspeople didn't like it so close to them so they took a vote and decided to move the asylum somewhere else. While transporting the occupants, the bus broke down near the bridge and they all escape. They were all found and captured except for one. All the police found were dead rabbits which they concluded ...

The Mothman

I'm sure many of you have seen the 2002 movie The Mothman Prophecies starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney. That movie was based on a real creature seen in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The myth of the Mothman began on November 12, 1966 in West Virginia. In a local cemetery, five men were preparing a grave for burial when they spotted a "brown human being" lift off from nearby trees and flew over their heads. The men were mystified by the sighting. The unidentified creature looked more like a man with wings rather than a bird. However, those five men wouldn't be the last ones to see it. Three days later, two married couples saw it as they were driving past an abandoned TNT plant near Point Pleasant, West Virginia. They claimed to have seen two large eyes attached to something shaped like a man with big wings folded against its back. When the creature moved toward the plant door, the couples panicked and sped away. Later on, they saw the same creature on a hillsid...
