Chernobyl

The Chernobyl Power Plant located outside the town of Pripyat, Ukraine (11 miles from the city of Chernobyl) began construction in the 1970s with the first reactor. Over the next few years three more reactors were added and two more were in the middle of construction at the time of the disaster. On April 26, 1986 at 1:23 a.m., the no. 4 reactor was shut down for maintenance. An experiment was being performed to test a safety emergency core cooling feature during the shut down procedure. It's uncertain as to what exact processes led to the explosions but a disruption in regulation seem to be a part of it.

The first explosion was that of steam. Steam from the wrecked channels entered the reactor inner space that caused the destruction of the reactor casing, tearing off and lifting by the force of 2,000 tons the upper plate. This ruptured further fuel channels, the reactor core suffered total water loss and a high positive void coefficient could entirely appear. The second explosions occurred seconds after the first. Some theorized the second explosion was caused by the hydrogen which had been produced either by the overheated steam-zirconium reaction or by the reaction of red-hot graphite with steam that produce hydrogen and oxygen. Others believed it was more nuclear or a thermal explosion of the reactor as a result of the uncontrollable escape of fast neutrons, caused by the complete water loss in the reactor core. Either way it was considered the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history. The fallout released was four times more than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

The explosions caused a chain reaction. The fire in Reactor 4 burned until May 10th, 1986 before it was finally extinguished thanks to Helicopters dropping sand and lead as well as injecting liquid nitrogen in to it. Radioactive particles were released in to the air. Smoke and wind carried it in to the nearby town as well as across international borders. Most of the radioactive fallout landed in Belarus. Light nuclear rain fell as far as Ireland. Over 336,000 people were evacuated. 600,000 people were exposed to radiation. Two people died in the initial steam explosion, but fifty-six people (47 accident workers and 9 children with thyroid cancer) directly died due to the disaster. There were as many as 4,000 cancer related deaths from those exposed to radiation. The nearby pine forest turned ginger brown and died earning the name "Red Forest". Horses left behind during the evacuation died due to destroyed thyroid glands. Some cattle also died but of those that survived, suffered stunted growth due to thyroid damage. Wild animals in the worst-hit areas either died or stopped reproducing.

After the disaster, all work on reactors 5 and 6 halted. Reactor 4 was sealed off with 660ft of concrete placed between the disaster site and operational buildings. A fire broke out in the turbine building of reactor 2 in 1991. It was declared beyond repair and shut down. Reactor 1 was decommissioned in November 1996 as part of a deal between the Ukrainian government and international organizations such as the IAEA. Then-President Leonid Kuchma personally turned off Reactor 3 in an official ceremony on December 15, 2000, shutting down the plant entirely.

The accident led to alleged governmental cover-ups and ghost towns. Pripyat has become somewhat a wildlife reserve. Most of those who were evacuated never came back. About 400 people were allowed to resettle in the Excursion Zone as along as they never request money or aid if they become ill. Since 2002, tours are provided for all those who want to see the infamous site.

Is the Chernobyl Power Plant haunted? Josh Gates and the Destination Truth team investigated the area and will determine whether or not eyewitness claims are true.

Some believe aliens were involved with the disaster. Witnesses claimed to have seen a UFO hovering above the plant for six hours during the accident. Three years later, a Doctor Gospina stated he saw an "amber-like" object above the plant. A year after that, a reporter photographed an object similar to the one Gospina described hovering above the disaster site.

A creature known as the Black Bird of Chernobyl was also sighted days leading up to the disaster. It is described as a large black, bird like creature or a headless man with a 20 foot wingspan, and red eyes. It has been compared to that of the Mothman in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. This creature has not been seen since the disaster. People experienced horrific nightmares, threatening phone calls and first-hand encounters with the winged-beast. Did they really see an unknown creature or was it something out of nature such as the black stork? We may never know.

The Pripyat, the Chernobyl worker town, is believed to be haunted. People have had the feeling of being watched when walking past the city hospital. Considering it looks like the aftermath of an apocalypse, that feeling may be anything but supernatural. Apparitions and shadows are often seen. Some have even reported being touched. But could the spirits of its victims be roaming the affected areas? We'll find out on Wednesday during the first paranormal investigation of Chernobyl.

FYI: This is my 666 post. Will the Beast be coming? :)

UFO? Black Bird of Chernobyl? The **** are people thinking? It was an accident caused by human error!

That one was so ******* scary!!! SPOILER they see soooooo many things jaels hand gets pulled and they see a person!!!

Its EXCLUSION zone cmon man you really made an amateur mistake like that?

Really. What will people think of next.

"or a headless man with a 20 foot wingspan, and red eyes"

...how can a headless man have red eyes? ridiculous.

I think it's reasonable. My personal experiences say anything is possible. They include demonic confrontation, the average shadow figure experiences, and the scariest so far (something affecting my life and my friends in drastic ways) an encounter with "slender man". This is possible, and likely.

it was a tragic event where many people died, of course its haunted
The bridge in direct-line to Reactor #4 received fatal doses of radiation. There were people that watched Reactor #4 meltdown. Not sure how many people died in the nuclear disaster. It is a sad tragedy.

if anyone believes this **** then you really ought to do re-consider your whole lifes beliefs yeah personally i believe Pripyat is haunted due to it being a complete ghost town but what the actual **** has a bird go to do with a nuclear incident im 14 and i know that is made completely out of random

I think people are being watched by something organic and solid, I think there REALLY is mutants in that area.
Anonymous said…
I have to agree with some people on the fact that the reactor incident was human made not some sort of alien disaster and I did a report on Ukraine and I included the chernobyl incident and found no facts of aliens or anything like that.

This certainly was a tragic story. when a area is haunted it is because a tragic event happened or, they have something that still needed to be done. ex. maybe something else went on w/the reactor no one knows about? Except the people in pripyat. i've seen the movie and its some fudged up crap man. i don't think there are mutant alien people hidding in the shadows like in the movie. but there is some paranormal activity in that area. it does look like a complete ghost town. its freaking creepy. ive seen pictures and heck..i'd like to visit one day. as long as no mutant ukranian aliens come attack me ;)

Actually, they wouldn't include UFO sightings in a main research site like Wikipidea. Let alone would you put it in your project... Also. Slender man is global but has no face. I believe Chernobyl is haunted.

He did say WEST virginia lady.

Look it is truly haunted I been there...at night...and I was ..i was very firm.on thinking.no way that this place is haunted...until shadows started becoming more mobile than I am ...then about 10:23 horrible screams human screams from different angles violent screams ...look believe what u may believe but it is true people. At the point I heard the screams I got on my ATV and headed away only to feel something behind me as I turned I looked back with my spotlighr to see a human figure that was very disfigured . I fucking sped away back to my truck n trailer ...loaded up n went to my hotel. I have nightmares to this day. Stay away from that place.

The person above me doesn't know how to speak properly so its obviously a troll. Honestly, I highly doubt anyone who goes there would NOT bring a camera, movie or pics. Proof or GTFO.
Also, Slenderman is just something people made up. No one I know, or have ever seen in my state or the neighboring states, have ever even HEARD of slenderman. Secondly put, I wouldn't be surprized if Chernobyl was infact haunted. And I extremely doubt aliens had to do with anything, or some bird thing. Sometimes people make crap up cuz of the shit they've seen or went through, idk, but it doesn't seem the least bit likely. But hey, opinions right? I do wish to go there to experience it myself someday, but I'm not rich enough to go international. I also have been wondering if maybe people keep stuff secret from the public, like if its truely vacant. Or maybe they're actually doing tests like the movie. Its not impossible, just unlikely that everyone wouldn't think to do something so crazy. Its at least human nature enough to think at least people have tried to reoccupy or conduct studies on the locale surrounding Chernobyl. Believe what you wish people, but this place is something worth looking into. Lastly, I doubt staying overnight, or going in the dark, would be such a good idea. Most people like the thrill or rush of this stuff, but most people like this aren't full of common sense.

I think it's a horrible accident caused by human error, but for people to try to make stories of UFO's and mutants is just fucking silly and dumb. I believe that there could be some paranormal activity there taking into account of how many people died there but if you really believe there is something mutant living there then you should probably do some research on radiation!!!

Im with the guy up the top it was human error, but you never know it could be haunted by spirits not by Aliens or a bick black bird, fucking Aliens you guys have been watching way to mutch TV.
Anonymous said…
You guys should really play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call Of Pripyat, its about the "Zone" and one person up there said there's mutants that is possible but it could be like some poor kid having a arm on his head not a viscious one.

Well I've heard there are things called echoes where if something like a strong event happens in time that it will repeat itself over and over so perhaps the hauntings and visuals are echoes of that day before or after the accident. Basically like an event leaving it's perminant fingerprint in time. So people walking around during the accident their imprint will be noticed throughout time, ex. seeing figures roam the streets and buildings during a certain time of day or night might resemble the day or time the "entities" were out and about.

with everyone saying what does mothman have to do with it in mothman prophecies he showed up before disasters so there was a theory he caused them...

We are not born with a SELF(me,I) and out of experience both negative and positive and our human desires the SELF come into being. This SELF is not a spritual entity but an evil human entity. Always lurking behind the person in all his experience. When we die what survives I believe is the SELF. God if there is one has not come to help us ever look at all the genocides, hunger, war, natural distasters. Why would this God come after we die. The body dies and the self lurks around and depending on our lives, the human entity survives. With so many sad and violent deaths why won't the place be haunted with all kinds of SELFS.

Guys think about what you're saying! There's some human 'mutant' walking the streets... really? The only time for mutation is when the cell is still a cell, nothing will mutate infront of your eyes; either you're saying - a) there's still families in there... (they'd die there within a year) or b) the parents left had a baby, nurtured it to atleast 8 and drop them back into Pripyat?! Smooth guys :)

Slender man was made up as a part of a contest to see who could make the most believable scary myth, including fake testimonials, newspaper articles and fake pictures.

Most of you people ard idiots. How could any of you say one way or the other unless you stepped foot in the place and witnessed things with your own eyes and ears. Or felt something for yourself. As far as I'm concerned anything is possible, humans are so unbelievably opinionated no one will ever know the entire truth of anything. Even the people responcible for the disaster could forget the facts. Or get them mixed up over time. I wish Icould slap some of you backhand style.

The big black bird could be associated with the angel of death (a reaper), its not always a beautiful winged creature or a skeleton with robes. Also, there may be spirits here because some did die tragically and those that did get out left the only home that they knew. Therefore, there is now an imprint of their former selves left here. Not to mention how anger may be what is keeping the spirits there.

No, it was made hundreds of years ago to keep kids out of the Black Forest in Germany.

Gotta love these people saying they believe Slender Man is real. I'm pretty sure it was some neck bearded gentleman photoshopping it into pictures on a Something Awful thread. In 2009. Back on topic, mutants and haunting seem extremely unlikely. Of all the observed animal in and around the high-level radiation zones, many are perfectly fine. With as unstable of isotopes released by the disaster, it would take hundreds or thousands of years for any mutation to not die or be eaten on the spot. As for haunting, I personally can say that I do not believe in ghosts or spirits, or demons. I highly doubt that if I go to Pripyat I will encounter any paranormal activity, but that is based on my belief.

I've read all the comments, and yours is by far the most acurate.
I do believe that this was caused by human error, yes, the bird man-thing most likely was a deformed animal or something someone made up and others went along with. Yes, this is place is most likely haunted because of the large amounts, and painful deaths it caused, and there are probably some sort of mututation to wild life and or people caused by radiation exposure. Then again, it might of just physically changed them or just mentally.

Oh yes, I am sure at 14 you know everything there is to know about the world, don't you?

I think there is something weird going on around Chernobyl. I really doubt a giant bird creature was the cause and UFO`s are well...unexplained...things in Chernobyl may or may not be like the movie..the only way to find out is to go there and see for yourself (I suggest u stay in your vehicle if u go..just in case) Chernobyl is a mystery and we have yet to find out why

I'm 14 and I don't think it's real life. As people get older there feelings towards spirits change e.g when u were a child u thought monsters lived under your bed and then u r mum or dad told u monsters aren't real but u still "see them well as you age u feel them so it might be a gust of wind blowing you. Most people that catch a glimpse of "the black bird" have probably saw it through the corner of their eye which is normal for someone

Why don't any of you people do even the tiniest bit of research about the whole event of Chernobyl and all the research and facts that have come in the decades after the accident? The internet has so much information out there about the status of the wildlife that currently reside and roam the area of Chernobyl and Pripyat. While there were MANY human and animal deformities caused in the first few years after the accident, most wildlife there are actually normal looking. There are no glowing, rabid animals or mutant people (humans would die very quickly if any lived close enough for long enough). There are some plant species that do glow, however. I just think it's a pretty cool looking place with a very sad history. If it were not safe, I doubt they would let normal people take tours of the area. Anyone can apply for a government pass to tour the area WITH a guide, although sometimes yours are cancelled for various reasons, but about 99% of the tours actually happen. Special permissions are made for scientists and filmmakers (providing they go through the radiation education prior to their trip). Just Google Chernobyl Tours and you'll find many people who've been and can share their experiences. I don't believe the "Mothman," a big black bird, or UFOs have anything to do with the accident. The accident was human error and there is much better information out there explaining exactly HOW the explosion happened. This article is not very educational about the actual happenings of the accident, so people, please educate yourselves a little more before making stupid comments.

I live 24 km away from pripyat and can see the chernobyl exclusion zone as well as pripyats.... Ive been in Pripyat many times the hital is nothing but a tourist attraction and a place for telling tales... Chernobyl itself is just a sight of horror.... It brings lots of memories but "Black bird with red eyes" rubbish the only birds that survived are crows.
