The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp

One of the most famous of all lizard man cases is the humanoid cryptid believed to inhabit areas of swampland in and around Lee County, South Carolina.

He is described as being about seven feet tall, bipedal, and stout, with green scaly skin and glowing orange or red eyes. It is said he has three toes on each foot and three fingers on each hand which end in a circular pad on them that stick to walls. Sometimes described as having lizard or human-like features.

The first known sighting of the creature was made by 17-year-old local Christopher Davis. He reported encountering the creature while driving home from work at 2 AM on June 29, 1988. Davis stopped on a road bordering Scape Ore Swamp in order to change a tire. When he was finishing up, stated he heard a thumping noise from behind him. Turned around to see a creature with glowing red eyes running towards him. Davis jumped in to his car and locked the door, trying to escape. The creature first grabbed the door handle and then, jumped on the roof. He swerved from side to side in an effort to throw it off and succeeded.

Upon he returning home, Davis inspected his car for damage or possibly evidence of this encounter. What he found was his side-view-mirror badly damaged, and scratch marks the roof of his car roof. No physical evidence of the creature. After the Davis sighting, there were several further reports of a large lizard-like creature and unusual scratches and bite marks found on cars parked close to the swamp.

The sheriff's department even made several plaster casts of what appeared to be three-toed footprints, measuring 14 inches in length. They weren't sent to the FBI after biologist advised them the prints were unclassifiable.

Whether the creature is real or a hoax, it has attracted tourists interested in seeing the creature as well as hunters interested in tracking it. A nearby radio station offered a $1 million reward to anybody who could capture the creature alive. However, reports of the creature have declined. TV shows like MonsterQuest and Destination Truth have both investigated the Lizard Man, forming their own conclusions of its possible existence.

Was he real? Will he ever be seen again? One way to keep track of him is at his Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lizard-Man-of-Scape-Ore-Swamp/45398165456.

This is one of my all-time fave monster stories. I remember when I first read about it and thought, "Holy smokes! I hope I never get a flat tire around here." (We'd just moved to Jacksonville, FL, which is not near the Lizard Man area, but I associated swamps with spooky beasts and maybe he had a cousin further south. I didn't want to meet it!)
